A
colleague of mine (
inadvertently) helped an inmate escape yesterday.
She was down at the mental health ward, representing people who are to be 'sectioned' - admitted to hospital without their consent. One client, from the max security wing, asked if they could have there interview outside in the sunshine.
"Sure", says she. His nurse comes out too, to keep an eye on him.
So they're chatting away when he sort of pauses. Takes a quick look round. Gives her a wink.
Then legs it. Up and over the fence, into the bushes and away.
Everyone just sits and stares. "Too fast for me", drawls his nurse.
Apparently it happens all the time. The med staff reckon he'll just get drunk and the
cops'll bring him back. But since no-one's supposed to be in this ward unless they are a real danger to themselves or others, it makes you wonder whether it shouldn't be taken more seriously. But that's the 'southerner' coming out in me I guess.
